Coal Management Optimization: Improving Energy Efficiency Through Smarter Resource Management

Reliable energy supply plays an important role in supporting Great Giant Foods’ production and operational activities in Lampung. While coal remains part of the company’s current energy mix, GGF recognizes the need to manage its use more efficiently and reduce its associated environmental impact.
In response, GGF initiated the Coal Management Optimization program to improve the efficiency of coal utilization, strengthen operational performance, and support more responsible energy management.
The initiative began with field assessments, data analysis, and a review of existing coal-management practices. Based on these findings, GGF identified several areas for improvement, including better inventory planning, improved storage practices to maintain material quality, more consistent quality testing and blending, and opportunities to recover and reuse residual heat from production processes.
Through these measures, GGF aims to generate more value from the energy resources currently in use while improving cost efficiency and reducing avoidable emissions.
The initiative reflects GGF’s broader commitment to a lower-emission business. For GGF, sustainability involves not only exploring cleaner energy alternatives, but also managing existing resources more intelligently, efficiently, and responsibly throughout the transition.
