GGF Executives Teach Sustainability at SMA Negeri 5 Bandung

Bandung, 16 December 2022Great Giant Foods (GGF) executives took part in a teaching session at SMA Negeri 5 Bandung as part of the Circolearn program, a practitioner teaching initiative where senior executives share knowledge directly with students. The session focused on Sustainability and Circular Economy, reflecting GGF’s long-standing commitment to integrated and sustainable farming practices.

GGF’s business units are built on a sustainable integrated farming model, applying three key principles of the circular economy: minimizing waste, maintaining the use of products and materials, and regenerating natural systems. Through this model, production waste and by-products are reused and processed into value-added products, ensuring efficiency and positive environmental impact.

In this inaugural Circolearn session, GGF senior executives delivered the material in an engaging way suited for first-year high school students. The session included interactive games and quizzes designed to raise awareness of sustainable choices in everyday life.

The event concluded with the presence of Sunpride and Duta booths, where students enjoyed Cavendish Bananas and Crystal Guavas, paired with Duta Pineapple & Passion Fruit Juice. Each participant also received a notebook made from recycled paper, reinforcing the sustainability message shared throughout the day.

Jakarta, 20 December 2022Great Giant Foods (GGF) was recognized as one of five major companies to receive the 2022 Tempo Circular Economy Award, winning two awards for its Circular Food Estate and Waste to Energy initiatives. The awards were received by Arief Fatullah, Head of Sustainability at GGF, during the ceremony held at the Tempo Building.

The Tempo Circular Economy Award is designed to acknowledge companies that successfully implement circular economy principles in their operations. This initiative reflects Indonesia’s broader agenda to advance a circular economy across various sectors, with the aim of protecting the environment, reducing waste, and optimizing resource efficiency.

Although this was the first time the award was held, Arif Zulkifli, Director of Tempo Media Group, affirmed that it would continue in the coming years, with expanded categories across more industries. “We will continue to develop the Tempo Circular Economy Award in the future. Tempo itself is committed to adopting circular economy practices step by step,” he said in his remarks.

The award highlights the importance of recognizing organizations that have pioneered circular economy practices, particularly in industries still largely operating under linear models. For GGF, this achievement reaffirms its commitment to sustainable innovation and its role as a frontrunner in driving positive change through circular economy initiatives.

Sunpride Strengthens Commitment to Reducing Food Waste and Building a Sustainable Fresh Fruit Ecosystem

Jakarta, December 22, 2022 – The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) reported in 2021 that Indonesia produces 115 to 184 kilograms of food waste per capita each year over the past two decades. Fruits and vegetables are the most wasted commodities in the food chain, with nearly half lost before reaching consumers across the Asia-Pacific region.

This issue has a major economic impact. According to Bappenas, losses from food waste cost Indonesia between IDR 213 trillion to IDR 551 trillion annually, or about 4–5% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This reality is a serious concern for Cindyanto Kristian, CEO of Fresh Fruit & GTM at Sunpride, who highlighted the problem during Sunpride’s 27th anniversary celebration at Pakubuwono Hotel, Jakarta.

“Indonesia still faces a huge challenge with food waste, especially fruit. Often, after harvest, fruit is not sold even though the quality is good. Through Sunpride, we want to create a fresh fruit ecosystem that helps maximize farmers’ production while reducing waste,” said Cindy.

To address this, Sunpride is developing a comprehensive fresh fruit ecosystem that focuses on:

  • Reducing food waste by optimizing fruit production and post-harvest handling.

  • Ensuring quality so harvested fruits reach consumers in the best condition.

  • Supporting a circular economy, where every part of the production process is utilized to minimize waste.

Cindy added, “From one banana tree, we cannot consume everything it produces. The question is, how can we make all parts useful so nothing is wasted? That is part of our circular economy commitment.”

Sunpride is also strengthening its partnerships with local farmers, offering solutions such as proper capacity planning, optimized harvest timing, and improved packaging and transportation methods.

In addition, Sunpride is implementing blockchain-based traceability technology for selected flagship products. This innovation allows the company to monitor fruit quality at every stage—from farmer to retail—ensuring transparency and freshness for consumers.

Jane Fransisca, CEO of Farmers Empowerment & Partnership at Sunpride, emphasized the collaborative approach:

“We have three forms of collaboration to empower local farmers and build a stronger fresh fruit ecosystem in Indonesia. Through these partnerships, we aim not only to support farmers’ livelihoods but also to contribute to the national economy.”

Through these initiatives, Sunpride reaffirms its mission to empower farmers, reduce food waste, and provide safe, high-quality fruits to Indonesian consumers, while contributing to a sustainable circular economy.
