GGF CEO Shares Insights at ICMA-SURE 2023 on Sustainable Rural Development

Purwokerto, 17 October 2023Chief Executive Officer of Great Giant Foods (GGF), Tommy Wattimena, was invited as one of the keynote speakers at the National Seminar of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) and the 6th International Conference on Multidisciplinary Approaches for Sustainable Rural Development (ICMA-SURE) 2023, held at the Krishna Ballroom, Purwokerto.

Carrying the theme “Advancing Health and Sustainable Development in Rural Communities – Current Challenges and Future Opportunities,” the event gathered academics, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss collaborative solutions for rural progress.

In his presentation, Tommy highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between industry and education to optimize Indonesia’s abundant natural resources and tap into export opportunities for advancing the nation’s competitiveness.

Drawing on his recent participation in the world’s largest food exhibition, Anuga Köln 2023 in Germany, he shared valuable industry insights:

“The global market value of processed foods and vegetables reached around USD 320 billion last year and is projected to grow at 5.5% annually. In the Asia-Pacific region, food processing is growing at nearly 6% per year, outpacing other global regions. This presents an enormous opportunity for Indonesia to leverage its agricultural strengths,” he explained.

Tommy also underscored key challenges Indonesia faces, including food loss and food waste, where Indonesia ranks second globally after Saudi Arabia, as well as persistent issues of malnutrition, stunting, and hunger.

“Agricultural products and food production often fail to reach consumers. The role of companies like GGF is to build reliable supply chains and invest in infrastructure so that food produced by farmers can reach consumers at a fair price,” he emphasized.

Reaffirming GGF’s commitment, Tommy concluded:

“Great Giant Foods is dedicated to providing nutrition both locally and globally, while ensuring our business contributes positively to the environment and society. By prioritizing sustainability, we aim to create a lasting legacy for future generations.”

GGF’s participation at ICMA-SURE 2023 reflects its commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture and rural development, while reinforcing the role of industry in shaping healthier, more resilient communities.
