GGF Health Clinic and CRD Team Socialize Stunting Prevention in Employee Housing

Health workers from the GGF Health Clinic together with the HRBP Great Giant Foods (GGF), supported by the Community Relation Development (CRD) team, carried out a socialization program on stunting prevention and data collection in the employee housing areas of Kijung, Lakop, and Great Giant Livestock (1/3).

In addition to the socialization, the activity also included monitoring the nutritional status of toddlers, as well as health checks for brides-to-be, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. Children under and over two years old were weighed and measured, while the team also observed the hygiene of MCK sanitation facilities in the area.

The activity was attended by People Partner Prot & Plant-Based Department Head, Movery Ferestian, Head of GGF Health Clinic, Nana Kupriatin, and Internal CRD, Gregorius Aris Cjahja Kristiawan.

On the occasion, Nana Kupriatin emphasized that the socialization aims to strengthen knowledge and education among posyandu cadres, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers living in the employee housing area.

“The hope is that through this socialization, nutritional issues can be identified early on so that children’s nutrition can be improved and stunting cases can be prevented in residential areas. Parents are encouraged to better understand and pay attention to fulfilling balanced nutrition for their children,” Nana explained.

Meanwhile, Suwanto, Head of RT Housing Environment Division 1B Lakop, welcomed the initiative and expressed his appreciation for the company’s concern.

“This socialization is very important. We hope the knowledge and strategies shared can be applied by the community so that together we can prevent and overcome stunting,” Suwanto said.

GGF Strengthens Commitment to Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

There are several important aspects that need to be understood about Greenhouse Gases (GHG) or greenhouse gas emissions, particularly those originating from the combustion of fossil fuels.

In principle, the greenhouse effect works similarly to conditions inside a greenhouse—where the sun’s heat is trapped in the earth’s atmosphere, causing a rise in global temperatures. The gases responsible for capturing this heat are called greenhouse gases, which include carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrous oxide (N₂O), and methane (CH₄).

According to Julius Sugarjanto, Sustainable Farming & Climate GGF, the company has long been paying close attention to the issue of greenhouse gases.

“The greenhouse effect is actually needed to regulate the earth’s temperature so that the difference between day and night is not too extreme. However, an excessive greenhouse effect causes global warming, where temperatures rise significantly. Surely this would be serious if people ignored it,” Julius explained.

In the agro-industrial agricultural sector, emissions arise not only from factories but also from upstream activities in plantations and farms. Fertilizer use—particularly nitrogen (N) fertilizers—plays a significant role, as their decomposition can release nitrous oxide (N₂O), one of the key greenhouse gases.

Another major contributor is methane gas (CH₄), which forms from the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste.

“Methane gas has 28 times the global warming potential of CO₂. With today’s large-scale agricultural activities, organic waste is produced in significant quantities, and if it undergoes anaerobic decay, it releases methane gas,” Julius added.

Julius emphasized that the three main greenhouse gases that must be managed are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. While CO₂ naturally forms through respiration and decomposition, massive human activity since the Industrial Revolution—including fossil fuel consumption in factories, transportation, and agriculture—has increased its concentration drastically.

At GGF, both plantations and factories contribute to emissions:

  • Plantations use nitrogen fertilizers.

  • Factories require energy, much of which still comes from fossil fuels.

Therefore, reducing emissions is a shared responsibility across all departments, not only the Sustainability team.

One of GGF’s strategic initiatives is the development of a Biogas Plant, designed not only to produce renewable energy but also to significantly cut emissions.

“The Biogas Plant is proof of our commitment. It has been proven to reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to before it was built,” Julius concluded.

Through these efforts, GGF continues to strengthen its contribution to global climate action and the transition toward a more sustainable future.

PT Umas Jaya Agrotama First Harvest of Partnership Cassava Demonstration Plot

Cultivating cassava plants is an alternative choice that farmers can make through a partnership program in the form of profit sharing in addition to having a long-term sustainable impact and making the land more productive.

This partnership program can be used as a means of educating farmers where in the partnership process it provides good planting standards to increase cassava harvest productivity.

This was conveyed by Adas Widiasmoro, Bromelain Enzyme & UJA Head, during the first cassava harvesting activity, on a half-hectare pilot plot in Kampung Tanjung Anom, Wednesday (14/9/22).

Adas said, “With the existence of a cassava partnership pattern with companies, at least it will be helped where it is difficult for farmers to get the availability of fertilizers used for the process of cultivating cassava plants.

Adas said, “with the existence of a cassava partnership pattern with companies at least it is helped where it is difficult for farmers to get the availability of fertilizers used for the process of cultivating cassava plants.”

With the partnership process with PT Umas Jaya Agrotama (PT UJA) it can help with initial capital assistance so that it is not burdensome for farmers in the context of purchasing fertilizer costs as a means and facility to produce better quality cassava crops.

PT UJA’s cassava partnership pattern with farmers is expected to increase the potential for cassava production where in this cooperation pattern PT UJA also involves PT Inbio Tani Nusantara (PT ITN) to procure LOB liquid organic fertilizer as well as provide technical counseling on its cultivation.

“Many things can be done so that cassava partnership farmers receive training and understand how to plant cassava with the correct care pattern. To get maximum production, of course, the land cultivation factor, seed selection, fertilization method and maintenance must also be considered,” said Pineapple R&D Manager Ibnu Parnadi during a discussion with cassava partnership farmers before the symbolic first harvest was carried out.

“Today there will be the first harvesting process for the cassava partnership demonstration plot, incidentally on my half hectare of land. Today’s harvest is Kasesat with a harvest age of 9 months. My prediction is that 15-17 tonnes during this time are usually around 13-14 tonnes during harvest,” said Mufid Hartono, the owner of the demonstration plot.

I am very happy to be able to join PT UJA’s cassava partnership program. There are conveniences that farmers get, especially the much needed fertilizer. By participating in this partnership, farmers are greatly helped, he said.

GGF Empowers Partner Farmers Through Mini Home Biogas (Biomiru) Program

Terbanggi Besar, Central Lampung – June 2022 – Great Giant Foods (GGF) has provided access to cow dung waste management through the Mini Home Biogas (Biomiru) Program for 10 partner cattle breeders fostered by the company in Kampung Kayu Palis, Bandar Sakti, Putra Lempuyang, Tanjung Anom, and Terbanggi Besar.

In collaboration with the Rumah Energi Foundation (YRE), GGF facilitated the construction of Biomiru reactors as an innovative solution to manage cattle manure while converting it into a renewable biogas energy source.

The socialization of Biomiru technology was held on June 7, 2022 in Tanjung Anom Village, followed by training on July 12, 2022 for program beneficiaries. The training covered the operation and maintenance of Biomiru as well as the processing of bio-slurry (biogas waste), which can be further utilized as organic fertilizer for plants.

Beyond generating clean energy, Biomiru’s by-products provide additional economic value to farmers by reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and LPG gas.

“Hopefully with this Biomiru, the beneficiary community can be economically empowered while adopting more environmentally friendly practices in cattle manure management,” said Tisa Virgiandriati, Corporate Relations Development (CRD) team member at GGF.

Biomiru itself is an innovative biodigester made from Poly Ethylene (PE) water reservoirs, installed underground and connected with PVC piping. The compact system only requires 3–6 m² of land, making it accessible for smallholder farmers.

One of GGF’s partner farmers in Terbanggi Besar shared his experience, noting that the gas produced from Biomiru is now used daily for cooking, significantly reducing household LPG expenses.

Through Biomiru, GGF strengthens its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives while supporting the government’s program to expand the use of environmentally friendly renewable energy at the community level.
