GGF Holds Training and Introduction to Cow Manure Processing Techniques into Biogas

The added value of utilizing waste at a company scale appears to be applicable on a smaller scale as well. For example, the circular economy concept of utilizing waste that has been carried out by Great Giant Foods (GGF), in addition to providing value to the company, also benefits the surrounding community.

Manure waste (cow dung) in the hands of experts can be more useful than just manure. In this case, the GGF Sustainability Team educates the public by training and introducing techniques for processing manure into biogas. The training was conducted at the Thobul Qolbi Mosque in Dusun I Rantaujaya Udik, Sukadana District, East Lampung Regency while still implementing the health protocol during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This training was opened by the Head of Region I Section of Way Kambas National Park, Bayu Aji Saputra, and was attended by 20 people from residents. The training on biogas introduction said GGF Assistant Manager of People & Community Sustainability, Gilang M. Nugraha, at the opening of the event as a means of sharing knowledge about biogas from cow dung that can be used by humans.

“Through this biogas introduction training, hopefully, there will be benefits of knowledge that can be learned by the community,” hoped Gilang.

Sustainability Project Expert Manager Julius Sugarjato as the speaker on biogas explained that cow dung that is not managed properly can cause health problems. That way, we must manage cow dung properly so that it becomes biogas, which is a gas resulting from fermentation activities from organic matter.

“The advantages of processing cow dung into biogas include getting an energy source or environmentally friendly fuel, the surrounding environment is clean and the residue of processing can be used as organic fertilizer,” explained Julius.

Meanwhile, Bayu Aji Saputra admitted that the activity initiated by GGF was very interesting and the material could be absorbed well by the community who are members of the Forest Farmers Group who are also assisted by the Way Kambas National Park area I.

“For the contribution of GGF, we would like to express our gratitude for educating the community about the introduction and use of biogas,” he explained.

Tumin, who is one of the training participants, admitted that after learning that cow dung can be processed to produce biogas, he and other residents are interested in building a simple installation made of cement, fiber, or plastic.

PT GGP’s Export Breaks the Shipment Record during the Pandemic

PT Great Giant Pineapple (GGP) broke the export activity record of up to 1,423 Fcl compared to 2017 of 1,417 Fcl. The hope is that this can continue for the following years so that other targets can be met.

“The highest record was September 2017 1,417 Fcl this year September 2020 exports reached 1,423 Fcl. We should appreciate this because, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the company’s work team was still able to provide maximum performance, “explained the Chairperson of the Lampung GGF ERT, Arief Fatullah.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, in principle, company management hoped that business operations could continue to run, there was no reason to stop production. To fulfill that, of course, several prerequisites must be met, including the employees and the work team in good health.

By the high production being carried out at this time, it is hoped that all employees will have the same thoughts about the Covid-19 pandemic, to minimize any disturbances related to Covid-19. The company hopes that employees will not underestimate the current Covid-19 pandemic and continue to carry out health protocols.

Arief explained that this condition is a challenge in itself for the company’s business considering that production is high and we hope that we can continue to maintain the safety and health of employees by implementing health protocols under existing regulations.

“This is a challenge in itself for the company’s business, considering that production is high. We do not expect that these thoughts will hinder Great Giant Foods’ business processes in general,” said Arief.

Besides, the company also hopes that employees will remain vigilant with a large number of people without symptoms (OTG) as COVID-19 patients. this will have a big impact on the company if there are employees who are confirmed with COVID-19. Management has delivered and decision regarding the sanctions for violation of health protocols, especially those related to campaign implementation. If there are employees who become a successful team during the campaign period and violate health protocols, it is feared that this will have great potential to become a new cluster.

Using the CSV Concept, Great Giant Foods will expand to Bali, Aceh, and North Sumatra

The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program is a form of corporate concern for the community with the aim of sustainable development. However, it is different from the food and beverage business of the Gunung Sewu Group, Great Giant Foods (GGF) is carrying out sustainable integration which not only turns CSR into philanthropy or grants but can help independent communities with partnership patterns. This was conveyed by GGF’s Junior Manager Sustainability, Gilang M Nughara in a webinar with the theme “GGF Building Community Socio-Economics through the Corporate Partnership Program”, Wednesday (12/08/2020).

“We want to produce products that are healthy for the community as well as being committed to being responsible for ensuring the welfare of employees and also for the surrounding community. In partnerships in the economic sector, we involve local communities to actively participate in making processed products such as banana cakes, banana chips, pineapple jam, wajik, and dodol using under special banana products of 8,000 kg/month with an increase in community income by 300% for 41 beneficiaries, “Concluded Gilang.

Gilang added that another partnership program is in the health sector, to fight for and internalize the GGF 2020 vision, which is to nourish people’s lives with quality food that is produced sustainably and innovatively. GGF launched Great Indonesia to align efforts to feed and enrich people’s lives and livelihoods. This community-based program aims to intervene in nutrition in the community as an accelerator for preventing stunting and obesity.

“In this program, GGF has reached 700 children to provide healthy breakfast, provide outreach to 2,100 mothers about nutrition, and coach 200 households to implement vegetable gardens in their yards. Also, there is the Great Giant Livestock (GGL) which helps empower farmers to maintain food security and improve farmers’ livelihoods. This program has reached more than 400 local farmers and increased gradually over the years to help local farmers become better, “said Gilang.

Furthermore, Head of Local Sourcing Sewu Segar Nusantara, Vera Monika also explained the benefits for both local farmers and GGF itself. According to him, the partnership pattern carries the concept of Creating Shared Value (CSV) while farmers receive guidance in the field of fruit plantations, can have access to global markets, and be linked with profitable partners (banks, governments, etc.). The company itself can secure local supplies, establish long-term relationships with farmers, and meet national and international market demands.

“We see that local farmers are still limited in their ability, market, and limited funding. Therefore, GGF can help problems in the field, from guiding harvesting, helping to sell cultivation products, and helping farmers get bank financing. We hope that local farmers can increase business opportunities by expanding their marketing to the international arena. In the future, we will also expand to the areas of Bali, Aceh, and North Sumatra” said Monika.

This is felt by one of GGL’s Cow Swadana CSV partners, Sarjono, who revealed that this program can create mutually beneficial businesses, which can increase farmer’s income while creating jobs in the region.

“I am grateful to Great Giant Livestock for providing knowledge and expertise in sustainable cattle farming. We hope together, God willing, will create harmony as a form of devotion to our beloved country” concluded Sarjono.
